Meet the France World Cup players of African descent

All African teams have been booted out of the 2018 World Cup, but it appears the continent still has massive representation in Russia.

Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Nigeria and Senegal all disappointed big time after failing to make it past the group stages of the tournament.

However, in France, Africa can genuinely lay claim to still having representative at the global showpiece.

Didier Deschamps’ team has as many as 14 players of African descent – that is more than half of the France squad.

Although a European nation, France is a country that has always welcomed black players into their national team.

In 1999 when they won the World Cup, then likes of Lilian Thruam, Marcel Desailly and Patrick Vieira were all key players in that team.

Twenty years on, and France are back on the world stage again, this time with even more black players than ever.

Les Bleus are one of the favourites in Russia, but that is because of the depth in quality that the team possesses.

Paul Pogba, Kylian Mbappe, Nabil Fekir, Ousmane Dembele and Blaise Matuidi have all proven to be an integral part of the current France set-up.

If you think Africa is still not in this World Cup, then you are joking (well, I must be joking too right?).

Below is the list of all France players at the World Cup with African roots.

1) Presnel Kimpembe – Congo

2) Samuel Umtiti – Cameroon

3) Paul Pogba- Guinea

4) Kylian Mbappé – Cameroon

5) Ousmane Dembélé – Senegal/Mali

6) Corentin Tolisso – Togo

7) N’Golo Kanté – Mali

8) Blaise Matuidi – DR Congo, Angola

9) Steven Nzonzi – DR Congo

10) Steve Mandanda – DR Congo

11) Adil Rami – Morocco

12) Nabil Fekir – Algeria

13) Djibril Sidibé – Senegal

14) Benjamin Mendy – Senegal

Goals from Kylian Mbappe, Antoinne Griezmann and Pavard ensured the south Americans got bundled out at the round of 16 stage

Though, Sergio Aguero, Di Maria and Gabriel Mercado also scored for the 2014 finalists but their goals were not enough to save them from crashing out of the tournament at that early stage.
