Gist: See! Fake Dismissed police officers arrested for impersonation

Two dismissed police officers have been nabbed for extortion while wearing fake uniforms in Lagos.

Two dismissed police officers have been arrested by operatives attached to the office of the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), Zone II, Lagos, for allegedly using their police uniforms and identity cards to extort money from unsuspecting people.

The two suspects, Joseph Okoye, 45, and 35-year-old Bitrus Yohonna, who had been earlier dismissed from the force due to some misdemeanor some years ago, were arrested by the Zonal X-Squad for driving commercial buses while dressing in police uniforms and allegedly extorting people respectively.

Okoya, who was dismissed in 2010, was arrested around the Abule-Ado Bus Stop on the Badagry Expressway in a bus marked XC755LSR while Yohonna, who got sacked from the force last year, was arrested around the Trade Fair Complex, wearing the Police Mobile Force (PMF) attire.

When a search was conducted on the suspects, the police found uniforms, police identity cards, piles of petition and statement forms, letter headed papers and some other incriminating documents.

Confirming the arrest, the Zonal Public Relations Officer, SP Muyiwa Adejobi, said:

“The suspects, who have confessed to using police uniform to perpetrate many illegal acts, will be charged to Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for impersonation and unlawful possession of Police accouterments.”
